What does ‘work equipment’ include?

Any equipment used by an employee at work is regarded as work equipment. It may range from basic tools such as a knife or hammer to more specialised equipment including for example circular saws, hydraulic lifting equipment and motorised vehicles. In the office environment, computers, photocopiers and even chairs are all part of the work equipment.

Examples of using work equipment will vary from job to job and the nature of the equipment used. Generally, the use of equipment will include starting or stopping the equipment, cleaning and transporting the equipment and the repair, maintenance and modification of the equipment.

A national survey by the Health and Safety Executive revealed that approximately 50% of workplaces employing 5 or more employees still cited work equipment as a common reported risk factor present in their workplace.

Why should I claim compensation?

Your employer has a duty to ensure your health and safety at work is not at risk when using work equipment. This includes:

  • ensuring that equipment is suitable and safe for the purpose it is to be used;
  • inspecting, repairing and servicing the equipment to ensure it is safe to use;
  • providing training in the correct and safe use of the equipment; and
  • ensuring that all safeguards are fitted and used to ensure the safe use of the equipment.

If you have experienced a workplace accident which involved work equipment, and it was not your fault, our specialist Personal Injury Solicitors in Skegness can help you to make a Claim for compensation. The level of compensation you receive will reflect the severity and recovery time of your injuries. Compensation is obtained to compensate the victim for any financial losses they may have incurred due to the accident.
