Hodgkinsons take steps to become dementia friendly

Tina Hill explains how she vows to makes Hodgkinsons dementia friendly

Hodgkinsons take steps to become dementia friendly

Hello, my name is Tina Hill and I am a Chartered Legal Executive working in the Private Client department of Hodgkinson’s Solicitors in Skegness.  Working with elderly clients I come across the Word Dementia many times.  I had a reasonable understanding of what the condition was or so I thought!

It was not until I was invited to join the Dementia Action Alliance in Skegness that I truly began to understand what dementia meant. Dementia Action Alliance is a group of local people of all professions that have the aim of making Skegness a Dementia Friendly Community.  I soon became a Dementia Friend myself (by attending a workshop approximately an hour long ) and it really opened my eyes as to how little I really knew about the condition and how it was possible to help people live well with Dementia. I am now co-chair of the Skegness Dementia Action Alliance and a Dementia Champion which enables me to pass on my knowledge and enthusiasm to others in the community.

Dementia is not a natural part of ageing, it is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (which is the most common cause) or a series of strokes. Specific symptoms depend on the parts of the brain that are damaged but can include memory loss, difficulties with thinking, problem solving and can even affect changes in mood and behaviour. These changes are often small to start with but for someone with dementia they have become severe enough to affect daily life. Dementia is progressive in nature, which essentially means symptoms gradually get worse over time.  How quickly dementia can progress however, varies greatly from person to person.

By making our staff dementia friends we aim to increase their understanding of people with dementia and inspire them to be more understanding and inclusive of people affected by dementia. It is our aim to make life easier for Clients with dementia and be aware and sympathetic to their needs so that they feel included and not isolated.

By becoming a dementia friendly organisation can benefit our Clients so they do not feel intimidated or under pressure when walking into a new environment. They will be understood, feel secure and valued.  Due to their difficulties, many people with dementia feel that they are no longer able to go out due to lack of confidence but by giving encouragement and support we can help people living with dementia to remain part of the community and live better and more fulfilled lives.

It is therefore our intention to make Hodgkinson’s Solicitors a Dementia Friendly organisation as soon as possible.
