On October 12th, Maisie Whittam will be travelling across the world to begin her latest charity challenge. The trek will take place over five days and the total distance covered will be approximately 30 miles. Due to the mountainous terrain and timeworn construction, it has been estimated that trekking 1 mile will take 1 hour!
Initially, Maisie’s fundraising goal was £3,125.00 which is a significant amount of money for Maisie’s chosen charity, St Barnabas Hospice Lincolnshire. Through hosting various events such as in-house bake sales and Hodgkinsons’ Summer Charity Ball, Maisie has currently raised £3,529.79 which is £400.00 over her goal! All the money raised from this challenge will contribute to St Barnabas’ future running costs to ensure that they can continue providing care to those living with life-limiting or terminal illnesses within Lincolnshire.
We recently interviewed Maisie to get an insight into how she is feeling in the run up to the big challenge…
What are you expecting from this challenge?
I think that the challenge will be very difficult, it is nothing like I have ever done before. As much as I prepare myself, I am still unknown to what is to come. It will test both my mental and physical state, but I know that the thought of doing it for a good cause makes it worthwhile. It is an opportunity I will never forget and something that will stay with me forever.
Have you found the preparation hard?
Raising the money was very enjoyable as I got the opportunity to host various events, including Hodgkinsons’ first ever charity ball. The ball was a fantastic event in which local individuals and business came together to raise money for this cause The response has been amazing, and it is due to the generosity of those who contributed in someway that I have been able to raise even more than I ever anticipated. Since February I have been training to ensure that I am fit and ready to endure this challenge. To test the waters I will be climbing Mount Snowdon in September which will provide me with a slight insight as to what is to come!
What made you want to take on this challenge?
I started my career with Hodgkinsons only last year, but in just one year I have been able to work closely with St Barnabas. Throughout working with them I have had a firsthand view of their genuine passion and care for the invaluable service that they provide for the local community. By raising money, we can help to secure the future of the charity and allow them to provide care for future generations.
