What is noise hearing loss?

This is a loss of hearing or hearing impairment due to exposure to high levels of noise at work. High work noise levels can destroy the tiny hair like cells in the inner ear which enable you to hear and which can cause you to become deaf or suffer partial deafness. It can cause varying degrees of hearing loss and other hearing problems, including tinnitus.

Exposure to high levels of noise vibration is one of the main causes of hearing loss in workers exposed to workplace noise and occupational noise.

Do I have hearing loss?

Common signs of hearing loss include:-
  • - not understanding what people are saying to you, especially in a crowd of people;
  • - trying to lip read;
  • - asking others to repeat themselves;
  • - telling others to stop mumbling;
  • - not hearing the door bell or telephone ringing;
  • - being told that you shout or speak loudly;
  • - having the television too loud.

To find out, take our online hearing test.

What can be done about my hearing loss?

Unfortunately, nothing can be done to cure your damaged hearing as the damage is permanent and incurable. A hearing aid or hearing aids (if both ears are badly damaged) can help improve but cannot fully correct the loss of hearing. In extreme cases it can result in you becoming completely deaf. The significant cost of a hearing aid and other equipment e.g. a special telephone can be claimed for as part of your claim, so you do not have to suffer delay waiting for it to be provided on the NHS.
