Hodgkinsons Celebrates World Book Day with St Barnabas Hospice

The 7th of March marks ‘World Book Day’, an international event created with the intention to give every child and young person a book of their own and to encourage them to love books and read. Reading is a valuable skill which is a critical key to success in education. It is found that reading also increases an individual’s imagination and empathy. The potential which reading presents to young people can help to pave their way of life. For many people, including the elderly, reading provides them with an “escape” from stress. Whilst not only is it a form of entertainment which will provide conversation and connections with others, reading has proven to provide much further benefits for elderly people such as enhancing memory and decision-making skills, delaying the onset of Alzheimer’s and Dementia, aiding better sleep and alleviating anxiety.

For many years Hodgkinsons have dedicated their efforts to fundraise for St Barnabas Hospice Lincolnshire, a fantastic charity which provides palliative care to those living with terminal or life-limiting illnesses in Lincolnshire. For many patients who are not mobile, reading a book or having one read to them may just be the short escape they need.

There are many different ways to celebrate World Book Day, from fancy dress to trips to the local library however the team here at Hodgkinsons have built a collection of books to donate to the charity. We hope that the books can be provided to patients or sold in local St Barnabas shops in exchange for a small donation. All donations given to the charity contribute to the annual running costs which will allow the fantastic work they do to carry on for many more years to come.
