Keeping paw-sitive in the work place

Today, Winston the Sausage Dog is the first lucky four-legged friend to be invited to the office as part of our ‘Bring Your Dog to Work Scheme’ to boost morale and relieve stress in the workplace!

Keeping paw-sitive in the work place

The COVID-19 pandemic was a period where many workers, particularly in the legal industry, were forced to work from home in a completely different environment to that of a traditional office.

During this time, many workers made lifestyle changes to suit the newfound flexibility of being able to work from home and also to combat the loneliness of not being able to see family and friends. It is as a result of this that the UK saw what is now known as the ‘Pandemic Puppy’ phenomenon!

Only 12 months after the start of the pandemic, UK households had purchased over 3.2 million pets (Pet Food Manufacturers Association), with young people aged 16-34 being the main drivers of this upward trend. Since then, pet ownership has grown exponentially, and as of this year, approximately 62% of the UK population are now pet owners!

So, other than having a faithful furry friend to come home to each night, what are the benefits of pet ownership, and how can these benefits also be seen in the workplace through a ‘Bring Your Dog to Work Scheme’?

  • Productivity – A study published by the University of Lincoln indicated that employee productivity increased by 33.4%, and overall work engagement by 14.4%, in the presence of dogs in the office environment!
  • Mental health and Well-being – Research has shown that being in the presence of a dog not only helps to reduce stress but also lowers heart rate and blood pressure, particularly in stressful and high tension situations.
  • Friendly environment – Linking to the abovementioned point, dogs help to create a more friendly environment which can help to improve morale, make employees more approachable, and encourage cooperation and teamwork in the workplace.
  • Job satisfaction – A University of Lincoln study recorded that 22% of employees said that allowing dogs into the workplace increased their satisfaction with workplace conditions.

Here at Hodgkinson’s, we are always looking for ways to support our employees and create a friendly atmosphere in the office, which is why this month we are piloting our very own ‘Bring Your Dog to Work Scheme’.

In this month’s random draw, Kira Young’s Sausage Dog, Winston, is the lucky pup who gets to grace the office corridors and say hello to all the employees of Hodgkinsons! In addition, Hodgkinsons will be raising funds for local charity, ‘Keith’s Rescue Dogs’ by holding a dress down day and bake sale.
