A Day in The Life of a Paralegal: Cameron Hill

Since joining Hodgkinsons in 2015 Cameron Hill has transitioned through numerous roles within the Company, recently qualifying as a Residential Conveyancing Paralegal. By passing a series of examinations, Cameron’s abilities and responsibilities within his role have now expanded. The day to day duties of being a Paralegal are never the same, but what is the working life of a Residential Conveyancing Paralegal like? Cameron tells us all…

A Day in The Life of a Paralegal: Cameron Hill

1. What has your career been like at Hodgkinsons Solicitors so far?

Originally, I joined the Company in 2015 as a receptionist. Since then I have taken on various different roles within the Industrial Disease Department, working as an Administrative Assistant. I joined the Conveyancing Department in January 2018 to assist Robert Foster and Paulina Wegorkiewicz. Since then I have learnt all aspects of being a Trainee Paralegal and have begun learning what it takes to become a Fee Earner. I have also recently completed and passed a Paralegal Course to develop a greater understanding of the law behind conveyancing.

2. What is your typical day in the office?

A typical day in the office involves numerous phone calls, communicating and negotiating with Clients, Solicitors, Estate Agents and any other third parties. My responsibilities also include handling incoming and outgoing post, dealing with Client and Solicitor enquiries, liaising with various parties, preparing and reviewing paperwork and attending upon Clients in the office.

3. Why did you want to become a Paralegal?

Originally, law always appeared to be quite overwhelming to me. Previous to joining the Conveyancing Department, I had worked in various legal departments and had decided law was maybe not my chosen career path. It was not until I joined the Conveyancing Team that I decided to enjoy my job role. It is very different to the other areas I had worked in previously and offers a faster paced working environment, which I much prefer.

4. Why did you choose to work and study part time?

I am a practical learner and find it much easier to grasp the law when physically dealing with it day to day rather than studying it. As I now work in conveyancing full time, I have learnt a lot through first hand experience, so when it came to studying in my own time, the knowledge I had gained was much easier to translate into my studies.

5. What would you say to anyone aspiring to study conveyancing as a Paralegal?

If you are someone currently working in law and have considered progressing towards becoming a Fee Earner in the future, a Paralegal course can greatly assist in your understanding of the job itself. It is not as extensive or as difficult as completing a degree, and it is much quicker and allows you to gain a better understanding of what is involved in becoming a Fee Earner.

6. What would be a good day in the office for you?

A good day in the office would include lots of successful completions (sale/purchase of house) and clearing all the work in the ‘to do’ trays.

7. What is your favorite part of your job?

I always enjoy dealing with questions and queries from Clients which test my legal knowledge especially when managing to solve issues that arise.

8. Where do you hope to take your career at Hodgkinsons next?

I am currently looking to take steps towards completing a Licensed Conveyancing course. This will provide me with all the knowledge I require to allow me to progress towards becoming a Fee Earner.
