Research from the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) states that approximately 12% of road traffic accidents involve a 'hit and run' driver, which is a total of around 17,000 per year. There are serious consequences for drivers who leave the scene of an accident but more importantly it is the victims and their families who are left to suffer potentially long-term physical, emotional and financial difficulties.
Independent research conducted by the Department of Criminology at the University of Leicester has started to identify some of the reasons why motorists ‘hit and run’. They range from the driver being simply unaware of their responsibility to stop at the scene to more serious reasons including a failure to insure their vehicle or intoxication by alcohol or drugs.
It is estimated that the total costs of a hit and run accident is unknown but in 2019 the cost of a road traffic accident ranged from £26,000 where the injuries were not serious to £250,000 where the accident involved a serious injury. Fatal accidents were estimated to involve costs over £2 million. Statistics from 2019 reveal that 'hit and run' accidents are the cause of 26,000 personal injuries and 130 fatalities per year.
Fortunately, in the UK, if you are involved in an accident involving an untraced driver you may be entitled to compensation from a government scheme known as the Motor Insurers Bureau which operates an Untraced Driver’s Compensation Scheme. Unfortunately, the Untraced Driver Scheme has strict rules and time limits and can be complex and difficult to deal with. Our Untraced Driver Accident Team can help you with your claim against the MIB to ensure you recover your full entitlement to compensation.
